Obituary of professor J.R.Jones
Dear IIS Member:
It is with sadness that I inform you Professor John Jones of the University of Surrey unexpectedly passed away on Monday, February 5. Professor Jones was an active member of the International Isotope Society, having served as President of the Society, Co-Organizer of the 3rd International Isotope Symposium held in Innsbruck, Austria in 1988 and more recently as the Editor of the Journal of Labelled Compounds and Radiopharmaceuticals. He was an accomplished Isotope Chemist having won the 2003 Melvin Calvin IIS Award and the Becquerel Medal in 2006 from the Royal Chemical Society. Professor Jones' accomplishments can best be summarized in the attached copy of his Melvin Calvin Award Address that was presented by Professor Bill Lockley.
Several times in the last week many people have stated how big a loss this is for the Isotope Community and how unexpected this was. Without exception, each person has also expressed their sadness of losing a friend, a mentor and a true gentleman. Personally, I will also miss his energetic smile and genuine words of encouragement that he provided every time we met.
If you would like to share any personal thoughts or memories of Professor Jones, please send them by e-mail to Alex Susan at iichkansas@kc.rr.com. Alex will see that they are posted on the IIS web site for others to read.
Sincerely,
Brad Maxwell, Ph.D. 2007 IIS President
