March 2003

Dear IIS Members:

The Board of Trustees of the IIS had a teleconference on March 7, 2003 to discuss several issues of importance to the Society. Most importantly the progress made by the Organizing Committee (Dennis Dean, Crist Filer, and Keith McCarthy) and Rich Perullo, the Infracture Coordinator, on the fast-approaching Boston Symposium was reviewed. The pieces are falling into place nicely. All session chairs have been identified and the programs are filling up nicely and within budget. All the Plenary speakers, the Banquet speaker, and all but one of the Sponsored speakers have been confirmed. Exhibitor response has been good with about 20 companies already committed. In a very difficult environment, the sponsorship campaign spearheaded by Crist Filer and Paul McNamara is doing very well. Their goal is to equal or exceed the amount raised for the Dresden Symposium. The major concerns at this point are insurance issues and a low level of commitment from our overseas members. This latter situation is a direct result of the current threats of war and terrorism. The Organizing Committee is doing a wonderful job putting the Boston Symposium together; but, they would welcome the assistance of the membership especially with regards to prompt registration and sponsorship. It was decided that a membership drive will be organized. The possibility of reducing the membership fee will be discussed at a future BOT meeting. If you know of anyone who may be interested in joining the IIS, please direct him or her to this Website for details on becoming a member. The status of the nominations for the IIS election was discussed. The Nomination Committee will soon have a final candidate list. A request from IsoSciences, LLC for the IIS to fund a summer research student at Villanova University was reviewed and approved. The results of the project, which will focus on borodeuteride exchange resin chemistry, will be posted on our Website and will be presented at a regional IIS meeting. This is an exciting first step by the IIS to fund isotope-related research on a University level. Any future requests for such funding will be considered by the BOT. The proposal submitted by Brad Keck of the US Central Chapter in August 2002 that the IIS fund a speaker exchange program between chapters was discussed further. It was agreed that normally local chapters should cover the costs of bringing speakers to their meetings. However, in exceptional circumstances, the IIS is prepared to assist with funding. The individual chapter organizers should contact the BOT. The members of the BOT wish you a very pleasant Spring and hope to see many of you in Boston this June.

Also discussed and available are two IIS – ICI integration proposal and presentations.
